Finally got my permit/license in nyc

I thought it was not possible at first, but I got my permit.
Now i need some help from you folks for choosing a shotgun and a rifle.

First, does anyone here know if you can get scopes or lasersights in NYC?
Second, assault weapons are banned here, so from the text below (comes from the NYPD permit applicatoin), what is the closest I can get to an AR-15 that will be legal?

I'm pretty new to this so all input is appreciated.

Assault Weapon Ban
On August 16, 1991 the Mayor signed Local Law 78 which banned the possession and sale of certain rifles
and shotguns that have been classified as ASSAULT WEAPONS.
THE FOLLOWING IS THE DEFINITION OF AN ASSAULT WEAPON
(a) Any semiautomatic centerfire or rimfire rifle or semiautomatic shotgun which has one or more of the
following features:
1. Folding or telescoping stock or no stock.
2. Pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon.
3. Bayonet mount.
4. Flash Suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor.
5. Barrel Shroud.
6. Grenade launcher.
7. Modifications of such features, or other features determined by rule of the Police Commissioner to be particularly suitable for military and not sporting purposes. In addition, the Police Commissioner may, in such rules, designate specific semiautomatic centerfire or rimfire rifles or semiautomatic shotguns, identified by make, model and/or manufacturers name, as within the definition of assault weapon, if the Police Commissioner determines that such weapons are particularly suitable for military and not sporting purposes.
(b) Any shotguns with a revolving cylinder magazine.
(c) Any part, or combination of parts, designed or intended to readily convert a rifle or shotgun into an
assault weapon.

hmmm....

Because of the stipulation of #7 I would STRONGLY recommend that you ask the police commissioner. He is your authority.

Geez I think you can get a BB gun.

Seriously I would buy a shotgun Remington 870 or mossberg equivalent.

My 870 came with two barrels 26in smooth bore and 21in rifled.

Here's a picture of my 870 with a surefire forend.

Figure bad guys prolly come at night and I don't want to fiddle with lights.

It will dispatch bad guys just like a tricked out shotgun.

Something else... I was shopping for buckshot at wally world in PA and the cashier checked my license and he told me he could sell to me if I was from NYC.
So you better check what the laws are for acquiring ammo.

Well, I'm not in NYC so I am not sure they have something more specific, but the 1991 assault weapon ban in NY state can be gotten around by purchasing a pre-ban weapon. For example I legally own a pre-ban AR-15, which I bought through the online bidding site gunbroker.com.

I found a good Colt AR-15 and called up Colt to check on the serial #. Once they verified it is pre-ban I went ahead and bought it.

Nope while you can own a AR any ware else in the state in Pre Ban or Post Ban configuration NYC specifically bans them in any configuration.

Damn, no grandfather clause for NYC?

That's really F*cked up. What happened to the people who owned such guns already ones this law was introduced? Were they were hunted down and forced to give up their arms?

They had to be removed from the city limits whether sold or stored.

It is possible that the 1914 Sullivan act restricting firearm possession by residents of the 5 boroughs comprising NYC is contrary to new york state law, and also has been superceded by both the firearm owners protection act and Heller vs District of Columbia.
Good luck with that.

NY state law or NYC law does not apply to you in PA. Only PA and federal law does.

In PA you can buy ammo w/o a license. There is no federal law stopping a non felon over 18/21 (longarm vs pistol) years of age from buying ammo.

Some wally worlds have a STORE POLICY that they ask to see ID from everyone.

Case in point, the walmart on 30 and 41 new me. It's a strait shot of about 2 miles to ILLanoyed. They ask for ID and if you are from ILL they want your FOID.

No law requires them to do this. They just suck.

If you go another 7 miles down 30 to the next walmart they only ask for ID if you appear underage as with most other walmarts.

Stop going to walmarts close to the state line ;)

*While it may be legal to buy ammo in PA and live in NYC or NY, it may be a crime to bring the ammo back across state/city lines without the proper license from your state or city. Again no federal law prohibits it, but your state or city might make possession (as opposed to purchasing) illegal as well. Don't laugh, some places are like that. You can own, but not buy.

Also I can't imagine having to get a permit to buy a gun. I have a hard enough time having to wait the 30 seconds while they do the NICS check. What crap!

Would a light be considered a modification and fall under stipulation #7 from above?

Good question. It cannot be considered a hunting accessory. If the authorities in NYC aknowledge that you can have the gun to protect your life against home invaders or the like than this light is undeniably a good thing.

Let me know what you find out.

I'll be visiting a friend this weekend who lives in NYC and is more familiar with the laws, so I'll update the thread.

Ammo laws are fine as long as it is shotgun and rifle( I had stuff shipped that even I was surprised ).........pistol ammo is the big no no.

Re: Finally got my permit/license in nyc

Utterly ridiculous....

I would be puking sick if I had to have a "special permit" to buy and/or own a shotgun or so-called "assault weapon"...

AR-15's and their equivalents are sold by and from individuals in my local newspaper and online trading forum weekly with no paperwork, permits...nothing.

If I wanted to place an unloaded AR-15 with lasersight, Trijicon scope, "jungle-taped" 30 round mags and 4 position stock in a gunrack in the back window of my truck and drive down Main Street, it would not be a problem with anyone.

People in NYS, NYC, NJ, CA and most of New England have no clue what kind of sheep pen they are already in.
